Why does it happen?
Oestrogen participates in regulating the vestibular system — the balance organ in the inner ear. Its fluctuation alters the production and composition of endolymphatic fluid, causing episodes of vertigo, dizziness and instability. Hot flashes and temperature changes can also trigger acute episodes.
Associated symptoms
- Sensation that the surroundings are spinning (true vertigo)
- Dizziness and imbalance when standing up quickly
- Nausea associated with episodes
- Feeling of pressure or blockage in the ears
- Tinnitus (ringing) during hormonal fluctuation periods
Vitamin D3 (2000 IU/day) + magnesium improve vestibular function and reduce vertigo frequency in women with deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency is extremely common in menopause and worsens symptoms.
Recommendations
- Constant hydration (at least 2 litres/day) — dehydration worsens vertigo
- Balance exercises: yoga, tai chi or Epley vestibular manoeuvres
- Vitamin D3 + magnesium as a daily preventive base
- Reduce sodium if there is a feeling of pressure or blockage in the ears
